Si Bernard Arnault en a sa manière, l’homme le plus riche d’Europe et parfois l’homme le plus riche du monde (lorsque ce n’est pas Elon Musk), il demanderait au président Macron de remplacer son Premier ministre de gauche par un Premier ministre de droite. C’est ce qu’affirme le périodique de recherche Politico, se basant sur des sources bien informées.
Le Premier ministre actuel de la France est Élisabeth Borne. Borne a été nommée par Macron lorsque son prédécesseur, Jean Castex, a démissionné le 16 mai 2022. Le centre-droit Castex avait promis de démissionner si Macron était réélu, dans l’idée de mettre quelqu’un de plus progressiste à sa place en geste envers la population. C’est ainsi que Borne, ancienne membre du Parti socialiste de gauche et actuellement membre du parti libéral de Macron, Renaissance (anciennement En Marche), a été choisie.
Politico écrit maintenant que le patron de LVMH et empereur du luxe, Bernard Arnault, s’est rendu au palais présidentiel début juillet avec la proposition de mettre Borne de côté et de la remplacer par un autre ministre. Sa préférence : le ministre de l’Intérieur plus à droite, Gérald Darmanin.
Darmanin, who rose under the right-wing president Sarkozy, previously attempted to become prime minister but was unsuccessful. The minister has been in the media frequently in recent months due to his role during the major riots in the suburbs: young people took to the streets due to the violent death of 17-year-old Nahel H. as a result of police intervention.
It is not entirely clear why Arnault would specifically want to see Darmanin step forward. The head of the luxury brand LVMH is an openly supporter of Macron and is close friends with his wife. However, he rarely speaks out on specific political matters.
Cannot be done easily
France is a presidential republic: Emmanuel Macron is the head of state as president, and the prime minister is the head of the government. Although Arnault lobbied with Macron for Borne’s dismissal, Macron does not have that power: he can appoint prime ministers but not remove them, which the cabinet must do. However, the president can make a request to the cabinet for such a dismissal.
